Ultimately, the gang managed to save Fry, but he inadvertently broke the time device, and froze time — for everyone but Fry and Leela. They got married, traveled and had as full a life as they could in a world where everyone and everything is frozen in time.
However, several episodes, including “A Flight to Remember”, “Xmas Story”, and “War is the H-Word”, hint that the two may share deeper feelings for each other. Leela met Lars Fillmore in Bender’s Big Score and quickly fell in love with him. They planned to be married, but Lars called off the wedding mysteriously on the day of the ceremony, ending their relationship. He reveals near the end of the film that he always loved Leela and sacrifices himself to save Leela and Fry. Leela and Fry then discovers that Lars was really the older, mature time duplicate of Fry, thus it was Fry she had been in love with. Leela kissed the original Fry on the cheek after both paid their respect to Lars.
The episode in question sees Fry and Amy start dating after going on a road trip together and having their car break down. They realize they have a lot in common, and a relationship soon forms. It honestly seems like a perfect match put together by the Love-Bot itself, but it wasn’t meant to be.

But the man Leela almost married, Lars, turned out to be an older time-duplicate of Fry and served as a reminder of how Fry could continue to grow. In “Leela and the Genestalk” we find that all is still well with them, when Fry offers Leela a kiss to console her over her squidification disorder. Of course she is not consoled, but she does return his kiss, even if half-heartedly. A similar situation, as touching but less romantic, occurs in “Xmas Story”, as Fry and Leela, expecting death soon at Santa’s hands, huddle together under a branch of mistletoe. Although it’s not as romantic as their interaction on the Titanic, the moment shows their deepening friendship. Another sign of their friendship that comes with a hint of romance is Fry’s response to Leela’s involvement with Alcazar. Fry reacts with apparent jealousy at first, but on reflection, realizes that he just wants Leela to be happy.
However, there are hints that the two already shared a sexual relationship prior to this episode. Their first on-screen sexual encounter in their own bodies occurred in “Free Will Hunting”. When Farnsworth tells them of his plan to repair the space-time continuum, Fry asks Leela, “What do you say? Want to go around again?” Leela responds, “I do.” The story makes it clear that Fry is indeed capable of impressing Leela, and not just on one date, but over the long term.
The Professor has created a device that rewinds time 10 seconds at a time, and another device, a bubble, that protects anyone inside of it from the effects of the device. In the beginning, a Bender-caused accident at an amusement park — he hurls nuts and bolts on the ride — causes Leela to launch into space and Fry believes he’s lost her forever. She survives, though, spurring Fry to commit to proposing to her.
Futuramamay have had far-out space adventures, but at its core, it still followed fairly typical sitcom plot lines, including the requisite “Will they or won’t they” journey for the two leads — Fry and Leela. Over the course of seven seasons, these two go from platonic chums to lovers who spend their entire lives together in the series finale. The next day, Zoidberg reattaches Fry’s head to his now-repaired body and everything returns to normal. Some of the nerves in Fry’s neck were apparently rewired so that Fry’s left leg hits him every time he touches his neck. As a result, Fry kicks Bender and his explosive butt finally blows up, saying “MY ASS! MY BEAUTIFUL ASS!”.
It’s a moment that will bring a tear to your eye and convince you to pick up the phone to tell your mom you love her. Fry and Leela remain close friends and become closer as time goes on. Fry plays the field but occasionally has bursts of lust, crush feelings, and rarely, something deeper for Leela. When he begins pursuing a relationship with Leela, it was after two years of ignoring her in favor of other women. In “I Dated a Robot”, she helps him to find a robot celebrity personality to “to be romantically linked with.”
From the beginning, Fry falls — literally — head over heels, and in love with a one-eyed woman from the future. Which becomes his present, a reality he embraces with the hope of uniting with the one he now considers his soulmate. It’s an incredibly sweet romance that blossomed naturally over the course of the show. Leela’s heart was not won with just grand gestures, but Fry’s willingness to grow as a person and become someone Leela could see as more than a friend. It also allowed Leela the chance to open up and actually be with someone, something the character often wished for in earlier seasons. Overall, Fry and Leela’s romance gave the sci-fi comedy a genuine, heartfelt story that was the perfect grounding element for Futurama.
